Negative skin friction can occur when a pile goes through a layer of material which can be compressed, such as loose fill. As the soil is compressed, even under its own weight, the change in layer depth causes a vertical load on the pile. This effectively reduces the piles ultimate load capacity.
This spreadsheet allows the user to calculate the maximum negative skin friction acting on a pile in certain conditions. The spreadsheet can calculate the maximum negative skin friction in any of the following conditions;
- where the pile includes a single fill layer which can consolidate
- where the pile includes a single compressible cohesive layer
- where the pile includes a layer of fill overlying a cohesive layer
