Octagonal Sections
Solid Octagonal steel sections are not commonly used for structural applications. This is because solid sections are not as efficient at resisting bending as other section shapes.
This is because a section’s resistance to bending is proportional to the average distance from the material within the section to the neutral axis. Material further away from the neutral axis experiences a larger lever arm effect. Therefore the material closest to the centre of a section is much less effective at resisting bending than the same material at the edge of a section.
This lever arm effect ensures that solid sections are much less efficient at resisting bending than the equivalent hollow section. For the same amount of material and similar cost, a larger hollow section will be much more resistant to bending than a smaller solid section.
Hollow octagonal sections are much more efficient at resisting bending. hollow octagonal sections have a greater local buckling resistance than square hollow sections or rectangular hollow sections. They also include flat sides which make installing connections to the section much easier than with circular hollow sections.
Like all regular polygonal sections they can achieve the same bending resistance in any direction, not just the two main axis. For this reason octagonal sections are often used as columns or members to resist wind loadings or similar which can act equally in any direction. Octagonal hollow sections are commonly used as lighting columns and posts for signs or flags.
Other regular polygons display the similar properties and are often used for similar purposes. Sections with 10, 12 or more sides are often used for large flood lights, lighting columns and other structures which can experience bending in any direction. The CivilWeb Section Modulus of Octagon Calculator can be used to model regular polygons with any number of sides.
CivilWeb Section Modulus of Octagon Calculator - Section Properties Included
The CivilWeb Section Modulus of Octagon Calculator includes a unique collection of section property calculation tools for solid octagonal sections. The spreadsheet can calculate all the section properties required for the design of solid octagonal sections of any size or material.
The CivilWeb Section Modulus of Octagon Calculator can be used to calculate the following section properties for user specified octagonal or polygonal sections;
- Cross sectional area
- Centre of gravity location
- Second moment of area (or moment of inertia) in both directions
- Radius of gyration in both directions
- Elastic section modulus
The CivilWeb Section Modulus of Octagon Calculator can be used for any regular polygon with any number of sides, in either solid or hollow with any wall thickness. Therefore the spreadsheet can be used for triangular, square, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal, decagonal or any other regular polygon section.
