The CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet is an easy to use design spreadsheet which can be used to design sprayed seal repairs to flexible roads. The spreadsheet completes all the required calculations for single or double sprayed seal repair to ensure that they are capable of accommodating the require design traffic levels.
The CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet includes unique design analysis tools which allow the designer to see at a glance exactly where the sprayed seal design can be optimised. This saves the designer hours of hand calculations for every sprayed seal design and allows a more precise optimised design to be completed. The CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet can be purchased at the bottom of this page for only £10.
Alternatively the Sprayed Seal Design spreadsheet is included in our full Flexible Pavement Design suite which includes all our flexible road design spreadsheets. This can be purchased for just £20. Or why not purchase our best value bundle the CivilWeb Pavement Design Excel Spreadsheet Suite which includes all our flexible design spreadsheets and our full Rigid Pavement Design Suite, which can be purchased for only £30.
Sprayed Seal Design
Spayed seal repairs are common all over the world as a fast and economical solution to asphalt road repairs. The sprayed seal consists of a thin layer of bituminous binder which is sprayed onto the road. Then a layer of aggregates are applied which stick to the binder and effectively create a thin new surfacing layer.
This application of a thin new sprayed seal surfacing layer helps to waterproof the existing asphalt which helps to prevent water from entering the road pavement structure. This improves the durability of the road as water ingress can weaken the stone layers beneath the pavement. The thin sprayed seal layer also improves the skid resistance of the road and can be used as a quick short term repair for more heavily damaged roads.
Single sprayed seal repairs are generally specified for low volume rural roads. A double sprayed seal repair involves a lower layer of larger aggregates followed by a second layer of smaller aggregates. Double sprayed seal repairs are commonly used for more heavily used roads and can be designed to accommodate significant volumes of traffic.
The design of sprayed seal repairs can be a time consuming process. The designer must balance the binder application rate, the aggregate size and the aggregate quantity. The CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet makes this process simple. The unique sprayed seal design analysis tools allow the designer to see at a glance exactly where the design can be optimised.
Completing this process by hand can take hours, particularly where an optimised design is required. This can only be completed using an iterative approach which may mean completing the calculations 5-10 times before an optimised solution is found. This spreadsheet completes all the calculations instantly and the unique design analysis tools allow the designer to complete a fully optimised design in minutes.
Sprayed Seal Design - Inputs
Firstly the designer must input the design and condition of the existing asphalt. This allows the spreadsheet to evaluate the strength of the existing pavement.
Next the designer must input the design loading conditions. This includes volumes of heavy vehicles expected to use the road and inputs to determine whether the traffic is channalised or whether the traffic is slow moving or not.
Finally the designer must input a proposed sprayed seal design. Single sprayed seals include only one layer, while the double sprayed seal design spreadsheet allows the designer to input two layers with larger aggregates used beneath a finer aggregate layer. The designer must input an aggregate size and flakiness index value. The CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet uses this information to calculate the design binder application rate and the design aggregate spread. The designer can then check that these values are suitable.
CivilWeb Sprayed Seal Design Spreadsheet includes unique tools shpwing the designer at a glance exactly what effect a change in traffic loading or aggregate size will have on the design voids factor, design binder application rate and aggregate spread rate. The designer can simply tailor these inputs to suit any particular design values they require. This can be done without time consuming iterative design procedures.
