Steel Channel Design
Steel channel or C shaped sections include RSC, UPN, PFC and UPE sections in Europe and C and MC sections in the US.
Steel channels are very commonly used in all kinds of steel framed buildings. The C shape concentrates most of the steel at the edges of the section where it is most efficient at resisting bending. The asymmetrical nature of the C section however makes it less stable than an I shaped section of equivalent size.
For this reason C shaped sections are typically used for secondary sections such as braces and joists rather than main columns and beams. C shaped sections are very easy to connect to other members making them useful as secondary members.
