The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS is a useful collection of geometrical and design properties for historical steel sections used in the UK and Europe. The spreadsheet covers all standard steel sections used in the UK since the 19th Century using information from the Historical Structural Steel Handbook. The spreadsheet also includes commonly used historical standard steel sections from Europe including France and Italy. The spreadsheet presents all the design data in an easy to use format and includes a diagram of each section showing the main section dimensions.
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS can be purchased on this page for only £19.99. Alternatively the Steel Section Ultimate Bundle includes standard steel section information from the US, Europe, Britain and India as well as calculators for non-standard sections for only £29.99, representing a saving of more than 60%.
Or why not buy our best value bundle? Our Full Steel Design Spreadsheet Suite can be purchased at the bottom of this page for only £49.99. This suite includes all of our steel design spreadsheets and represents an incredible saving of 66%. This suite can also be purchased at the bottom of this page.
Historical Steel Section Information
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS includes all the critical geometrical and design property information required for the design or analysis of British and European historical standard steel sections. The spreadsheet contains vital information for the analysis of existing structures which contain older steel sections. In the UK imperial sized sections in inches were used before the metric system was adopted in the 1970s. This means that older steel sections often do not match modern metric beam sections.
Steel section standards are also revised regularly with new sections added and others removed from the standards. This changes as manufacturer's change their standard sized sections to suit new needs. This also means that when a steel framed building needs to be extended or altered, often the information required for the analysis of the original section is not included in the latest steel standard information.
In these cases the designer must manually sort through a variety of older steel standards in order to ascertain the required information for analysis. This can be a difficult and time-consuming process, the correct standard may not be known and could go back more than 100 years. In these cases copies of the required standard might not be available.
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS removes the need for the designer to sort manually through old standards. All old UK steel standards are included pre-installed within the spreadsheet. The designer need only enter the section name and the spreadsheet presents all the section design information in metric units for analysis.
Historical Steel Section Standards
The spreadsheet uses information from the Historical Structural Steel Handbook to include all standard sized historical sections used in the UK since 1887. The spreadsheet also includes historical sections from Europe including France and Italy. Historical sections from Germany tend to correlate closely with sections from France and Italy so these can be useful for German sections also.
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS includes full section property information from the following sources; Dorman Long Beam, Channel and Angle Section Sizes from 1887, British Standard 4 from 1903, BS4 from 1921, BS4 from 1932, BS4B from 1959, BS4 from 1962 and 1963, BS4 from 1972 and the amendment from 1975 and British Standard 6 from 1904. The spreadsheet also includes full section information from Longwy in France from around 1900 and beam sizes rolled in Italy from around 1900.
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS includes information on the following sections; Many different I shaped beams, C shaped Channel Sections, equal and unequal L shaped angle sections.
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS includes detailed information on the geometrical properties of each of the steel sections. The geometrical properties include all the main geometrical properties of each section along with the cross sectional area, moment of inertia, radius of gyration and the elastic section modulus for each section in each relevant axis. The spreadsheet converts all the old imperial sectional information into metric units for analysis.
CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS
The CivilWeb Historical Steel Section Properties XLS is an essential resource for any designer working on or analysing existing steel structures. All steel structures built more than 40 years ago will include historical steel sections in imperial units which will not perfectly correspond to any section included in standard section information published today. This spreadsheet includes all the information required for analysis of any standard UK steel sections used in the last 150 years.
