The CivilWeb I Beam Section Properties Calculator is an easy to use spreadsheet which can be used to calculate all the section properties required for the design of I shaped beams and columns. The spreadsheet includes all standard I beams from US (AISC), EU, UK and Indian steel design standards.
The spreadsheet also includes a powerful calculator which can be used to calculate the design section properties for bespoke or fabricated I beam sections which do not fit with any of the standard sections. This includes I beam section modulus calculator, I beam second moment of area calculator and warping constant I beam calculator. The spreadsheet can accommodate asymmetrical I beams as well as symmetrical sections.
Together this combination of a comprehensive set of standard values and calculations for user defined I beam sections ensures that the designer can determine the required design section properties for any I beam section, either standard or non-standard. This makes this spreadsheet essential for any designer working with I shaped beams or columns. The CivilWeb I Beam Section Properties Calculator can be purchased on this page for only £9.99.
Alternatively the Full Steel Section Properties Excel Suite includes all the design section information from all standard section shapes and sizes, totalling thousands of different sections. It also includes all our non-standard sized beam section property calculators. Together this powerful suite of spreadsheets includes all the information required for the design of any standard or non-standard steelwork section. This unique collection of design information and calculators is available for purchase for only £29.99.

I Beam Section Properties
I beams are the most commonly used shape for beams and columns in steel construction. They can also be used in aluminium or other materials though steel is by far the most common application. This is because the I shape places the majority of the steel at the top and bottom of the section where they are most effective in resisting bending. This leads to an economical section without wasting any expensive steel in the centre of the beam where it is not effective.
When a beam experiences a bending moment it’s resistance to that moment depends on the strength of the material and the shape. The resistance of a shape to bending is increased when more of the material is placed further away from the neutral axis or centre of the shape. This material experiences a lever arm effect which effectively multiplies its effectiveness is resistance to bending.
The best example of this effect is a long flat shape like a ruler. A ruler is very easy to bend in one direction because the material is long and flat with all the material close to the centre as the ruler bends. However turn the same ruler on its side and it becomes much more resistant to bending. This is because the exact same material is now much further from the centre of the ruler, adding a lever arm to the resistance.
An I beam works in an even more pronounced manner with the majority of the steel placed at the extremities of the beam. This maximises the lever arm effect and results in a beam which is very resistant to bending in this direction relative to the amount of material used.
For this reason I beams are the most commonly used beams for structural steelwork where bending is critical. Chunky square profile I shaped columns are also often used for columns loaded with axial forces and bending moments.
