The CivilWeb Moment of Inertia of Z Section Calculator is a useful spreadsheet which can be used to determine all the required section property information for Z shaped purlin sections. The spreadsheet includes all the section property information included in UK steel standards (Arcelor Mittal Orange Book). The spreadsheet also includes a powerful section property calculator which can be used to determine the section design properties from non-standard Z shaped sections of any dimensions.
In combination these two tools allow the designer to determine all the section property information required for the design of any standard or non-standard sized Z purlin section. This makes this spreadsheet a vital tool for any designer working with Z purlin sections. The CivilWeb Moment of Inertia of Z Section Calculator can be purchased on this page for only £9.99.
Alternatively the full Steel Section Properties Excel Suite includes all the design section information from all standard section shapes and sizes, totalling thousands of different sections. It also includes all our non-standard sized beam section property calculators. Together this powerful suite of spreadsheets includes all the information required for the design of any standard or non-standard steelwork section. This unique collection of design information and calculators is available for only £29.99.
Or why not buy our best value bundle? Our Full Steel Design Spreadsheet Suite can be purchased at the bottom of this page for only £49.99. This suite includes all of our steel design spreadsheets and represents an incredible saving of 66%. This suite can also be purchased at the bottom of this page.
Z Sections
Z shaped sections are commonly used as purlins and rails for steel sheet cladding systems and roofing systems. The purlins sit between the outer steel sheets and the internal main steel frame sections. The Z sections shape gives it additional strength compared to comparable C shaped sections which are also often used for the same purposes.
The Z purlins shape allows it to take advantage of the lever arm effect to increase the sections resistance to bending. A sections resistance to bending comes from a combination of the quantity of material and this material's distance from the neutral axis running through the centre of the section. Material further from the neutral axis experiences a multiplier effect from this distance which is known as the lever arm. The further away from the neutral axis the material is, the greater its contribution to the sections bending resistance.
This lever arm effect is why solid sections are much less efficient and therefore used very rarely, while open sections or hollow sections are much more efficient at resisting bending and why they are used much more commonly is structural design.
A Z section includes much of its material at the extremities of the section in the two flanges, and little material in the centre in the web which holds the two together. This allows the z section to achieve very efficient bending resistance for relatively little material and cost.
