Solid Circular Sections
Solid circular sections are commonly used in many different types of construction. Much more common in structural steel design is the circular hollow section (CHS). Circular hollow sections are a much more efficient use of material than a solid circular section because the material in the centre of the section is not as effective at resisting bending than the material around the edges.
This is because the materials resistance to bending is determined by its strength and it’s distance from the neutral axis. This determines its lever arm and works as a multiplier on bending resistance. In a circular section the neutral axis passes through the centre of the section. This means that all the material in the centre of the sections does not take advantage of the lever arm multiplier effect, reducing its contribution to the bending resistance of the section.
For this reason circular hollow sections are much more efficient use of the material than a solid circular section, at least where bending resistance is concerned. For the same amount of material and a similar cost, it is much more efficient to use a larger circular hollow section with the material spread around the outside of the section, rather than use a smaller diameter solid circular section.
Solid circular sections are still in common use. Often this is because a section is too small for a hollow section to be fabricated. Also solid circular sections are often used as part of composite shaped sections and also when reinforcement steel or other solid circular sections are cheap and easily available.
